Part Three
25.
Lincoln had come to the beach for the purpose of cooling down, but by the time he began to ascend the flattest, easiest rock path over Oyster Point to the private bay behind it, he wondered if he was going to melt before he stepped toe in the water. It had to be at least forty degrees! The beach was glaringly bright, and a thin haze shimmered in the air between the burning sand and the blistering sky, as though the humidity had decided to take form and fight off the dry heat after all. The sun burned his neck, and he knew that had he still been human, he would have blistered from it within ten minutes. For the first time, he missed the human ability to cool himself off with sweat, and was beginning to understand why Ivyanne had managed to work herself up into some truly insufferable moods at the end of the previous summer, because not being able to swim all day when he was going out of his mind for want of a warm, wet body under his was killing him!
There was a sudden scurrying sound, and Lincoln had to swallow back a very girlish squeal as a little boy suddenly popped out between two massive boulders, closer to the shore, and only a few inches from Lincoln. The boyâs basil-green eyes widened, as he was sure his own had, and then he glowered at Lincoln, ducked his head and bolted past, his nimble feet navigating the uneven terrain Lincoln (who considered himself to be in fantastic shape) still struggled to climb over on cooler days!
âHey!â Lincoln swung around, steadying himself on one of the boulders, disturbed by the fact that a child so young seemed to be completely alone, soaking wet (which meant he had been swimming in the very unsafe waters ) buck naked and covered in painful looking red welts. Who the hell was he? Where had he come from? What was he fleeing? Had he been stung? It sure looked liked like it! Lincoln wanted to take off after him, but he also didnât want to be seen doing so, a fully-grown man; chasing a wet, naked little boy along a deserted beach- on a workday! Like his reputation hadnât suffered enough thanks to OK magazine?
âHey!â He cupped his hands around his mouth and flinched as his own ears rang. He so often forgot that his Mer lungs didnât require stereo-sound and the feedback was painful above the surface. âAre you all right?â
The boy had made it to the sand and was racing up the beach, but he glanced back over his shoulder and to Lincolnâs shock- flipped up his middle finger, then veered towards the Seaview.
Lincoln stared after the boyâs shrinking silhouette as he scampered up the hottest, palest sand, absolutely bewildered. âOkay...â he spoke allowed. âDid I just hallucinate that?â He blinked, shook himself off and then leaned over the rock heâd just eased himself over, bending and
